While at the launch of the latest PlayStation 3 blockbuster Uncharted 3: Drakes Deception at the Sydney Opera House, TT stumbled upon Sony’s HMZ-T1 Head Mounted Display that was first glimpsed at this years Consumer Electronics Show in las Vegas.
Reminding us of an old fashioned virtual reality headset, the HMZ-T1 has twin OLED displays that deliver 2D and 3D content directly to your eyes, along with 360 degree virtual 5.1 surround sound via an integrated headset.
TT tested the unit for a few minutes while playing Uncharted 3 in 3D and we came away very impressed. The Sony representative on-hand said that the unit simulates a screen size similar to a cinema and we have to agree.
The display was quite amazing. The image was crystal clear and very bright, plus the 3D effect is one of the best we have seen. While 3D often causes eye strain and dizziness, the HMZ-T1 is crosstalk-free so should stop this.
The system can play movies and PS3 games, but we think that gaming is the area where this can really take off. This is because it creates a truly immersive experience and blocks out distractions around you.
We can’t make a proper judgement on the sound performance because we were in a very noisy environment, but we did manage to hear sound clearly with multiple people talking in the vicinity and a DJ playing music in the background.
Sony couldn’t confirm whether this will even make it to Australia, but the fact that it was on display at a product launch is promising. Pricing is said to be around $799 in the US.
