The Verdict:
In what Nikon calls the first Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens (A-CIL), the Nikon 1 J1 marks the company’s first foray into the mirrorless segment.
Thankfully the wait has been worth it, because Nikon has created a beautiful camera both inside and out.
The external design is exceptional, with a robust and sturdy feeling chassis that still manages to be lightweight.
Button and menu layout is well thought out and the pop-up flash is well placed.
As for performance, the J1 doesn’t disappoint either. Although it has a fairly small image sensor, it takes great shots, especially in low light situations and the AF is one of the best TT has seen in its class. Full HD video recording is also top notch.
The amount of extra functions thrown in makes this a great option for anyone wanting to experiment with a little more creativity.
The only niggle we had was that the battery life is disappointing at around 230 shots. However this is far and away the best mirrorless camera we have got our hands on.
9/10
